Good news! For yet another year, preparations for Valentine’s day has kicked off.

While people often think V-Day is something that only the post-80s generation celebrates, the origins of this day date back to the Roman Empire.

Some think of it as a day to celebrate their love, others think of it as ridiculous, while still others feel it’s a day to make single people feel bad, but here are some facts about Valentine’s Day that might take you by surprise.

Here are facts that you might not know about V-Day


1. Saint Valentinus was executed on February 14th 270 AD by the Roman Emperor Claudius II, because he secretly helped soldiers to get married, and the emperor thought that soldiers with wives did not fight very well.

2. In 1537, England’s King Henry VII officially declared Feb. 14 the holiday of St. Valentine’s Day.

3.  In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who would be their Valentine. They would wear this name pinned onto their sleeves for one week for everyone to see. This was the origin of the expression “to wear your heart on your sleeve.”

4. 73 percent of people who buy flowers for Valentine’s Day are men, while only 27 percent are women.

5. Valentine Day is one of the most popular days to pop the question. An estimated 2,20,000 proposals take place on what’s considered the most romantic day of the year.

6. The red rose was the favorite flower of Venus, the Roman goddess of love.

7.  Women purchase approximately 85 percent of all valentines day gifts.

8. The longest kiss started in Pattaya, Thailand on February 14th 2011, and ended 46 hours and 24 minutes later. The husband and wife could not sit, eat or sleep during the kiss.

9. A lot of people give chocolates on Valentine’s Day, but the biggest box of chocolates ever was made in the UK in April, 2008. It weighed 1,690 kilos and had more than 220,000 chocolates inside.

10. Your pets can be your valentine too.
