Since Governor Akinwunmi Ambode announced the Lagos light-up project, the city has witnessed a dramatic change. The reason for the light-up project is not unconnected to the spate of robbery and other crimes that affected the city during the first six months that Ambode was inaugurated as the governor of the state.
The Economist wrote a biting article on the situation, accusing the governor of not taking the security of the state serious. While the governor later donated security equipment to the police force in Lagos, he appointed the deputy governor, Oluranti Adebule to head the Lagos light-up project. The project which is geared towards illuminating all parts of the state is serving a dual purpose.
It is primarily a measure to prevent crime in the city which would have been easy and tempting in an unlighted place. Criminals who used to operate in traffic face an uphill task if they venture to commit crime in the city coupled with the new security measures put into place.
Secondly, the project is also contributing to the beauty of Lagos as the aesthetics value of the city is increased. Commuting in the city under the illuminating light exudes the beauty of the city.
