Transgender Woman Kills Herself by Taking Deadly Seeds from Indian 'Suicide Tree'

Lucia McCalip, 22, was found writhing in agony on her bathroom in Calumet City, Illinois, and later died after taking the seeds pictured below:

McCalip, who had recently changed her name from Bernard, told her mother that she had taken the tropical seeds, which come from an Indian plant nicknamed the 'suicide tree'.

Her grieving mother, Natosha Anderson, told ABC 7 that McCalip died in agony.
'I'm pretty sure he thought it was going to be easy, but it wasn't. He died in pain. I was slow, and it was painful,' she said.

She described the devastating scene she walked in on after finding her child rolling around on the bathroom floor.

Ms Anderson said:
'He said,"'I can't feel my heart." And I said, "What's wrong? What's going on?" And he said, "I took a pong seed." And I said, "A what? What is that?"
'The police, the paramedics, they didn't even know, no one knew,' she added.
'My last words to him were "I love you", and his last words to me were, 'I love you, mom no matter what,"' Ms Anderson said.

McCalip died in hospital on February 15.

An emotional Ms Anderson said she was speaking out to warn other people of the dangers of the seeds so McCalip did not 'die in vain'.
'I think if I can save one person or make one person aware of what's going on and what people are selling. If I can save one life, just one,' she said,
The 22-year-old had been suffering from issues related to her gender, but did not appear to be depressed or suicidal, her mother said.

Lake County Medical Examiner said McCalip's cause of death had not been established and it could be months before toxicology results come back.

The use of pong pong seeds for suicide is rare in America, however officials in Illinois told the Huffington Post they are investigating a possible second death related to the poisonous plant.
