Around 3,132 megawatts (mw) of electricity generation capacity cannot be added to the current generation capacity because of gas supply constraints, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said yesterday.
Osinbajo said it was an irony that Nigeria had insufficient gas to fire its power plants up to 7,000mw, despite the country’s reported huge deposit of natural gas reserves which placed her ninth in the league of countries with large gas reserves in the world.
Speaking at the 9th Annual Conference of the Nigerian Association of Energy Economics (NAEE) in Abuja, the vice president said: “The reported gas constraint to electricity generation as at April 23, 2016, alone was about 3,132mw.”
Osinbajo, represented by his senior special assistant (power and privatisation), Chiedu Ugbo, stated that the situation remained as it was because there were no investments in gas gathering and processing facilities for domestic consumption, especially for the power plants.
