Adeosun: Improved living standard our priority
The Federal Government is not focusing on only workers’ minimum wage but rather on the improvement in the standard of living among the generality of Nigerians, the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, said yesterday.

She said during the ongoing sectoral debate at the House of Representatives that the prioritisation of infrastructure development through road construction, housing, transport and capital investment was more important than considering the increase in minimum wage for workers.

Adeosun, who was answering a question from the House Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila, on how government could source funds for the minimum wage increase, said as a member of the NLC-federal government discussion committee, she could not give an explicit answer to that.

“We are prioritising improving the cost of living. Cost of living is more important than the minimum wage,” she said.

She said federal government would continue to prioritise budgetary releases to the agencies based on order of projects to be executed.

Adeosun also told the House that over N4 billion was being spent yearly on rent payments by different agencies, but efforts were underway to move such agencies into the recovered properties in Lagos and Abuja to save costs.
