A West Virginia mayor has resigned following backlash over a racist Facebook post about Michelle Obama.
Mayor Beverly Whaling's resignation was accepted on Tuesday afternoon by the Clay Town Council after she posted a response to a racist comment about the first lady shortly after Donald Trump was elected president.
'It will be refreshing to have a classy, beautiful, dignified First Lady in the White House. I'm tired of seeing a Ape in heels,' wrote Clay County Development Corporation director Pamela Ramsey Taylor.
Whaling responded: 'Just made my day Pam.'
Whaling's resignation follows mounting pressure for the Mayor to be fired. Taylor told WCHS-TV on Monday night that she was put on leave.
Council member Jason Hubbard issued a brief statement condemning the 'horrific' post and said 'racial intolerance isn't what this community is about.'
He apologized on behalf of the town to anyone who is offended, including Michelle Obama.
The Facebook post, which was first reported by WSAZ-TV, was deleted but not before it was shared hundreds of times on social media. The Facebook pages of Taylor and Whaling couldn't be found Monday.
The two women have since apologized for their remarks.
