Tot Brogan Fenton died from head injuries less than an hour after being accidentally struck by his mum who was on her way to collect his five-year-old brother from school.
The car was parked in a double garage at the bottom of the family’s driveway in Lingwell Nook Lane, Lofthouse, Wakefield.
An inquest into his tragic death heard his mum had activated the electric roller shutter door using her key before getting into the vehicle.
She was unaware Brogan was nearby and as she moved the car forwards out of the garage, she hit the toddler and he became trapped.
Coroner David Hinchliff said: “Realising that an incident had happened in respect of Brogan, his mother ran into the house to get immediate help from his grandfather.”
Brogan’s granddad rushed to the car to free the youngster.
Paramedics and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance were among the emergency services which were called out to the scene.
But an air ambulance doctor confirmed Brogan’s death at 2.47pm – within 40 minutes after the incident at around 2.10pm on January 4, the inquest was told.
The coroner said an interim post-mortem report gave the cause of his death as a head injury.
He adjourned the inquest pending the outcome of further enquiries.
