The Federal Government on Thursday bowed to pressure and directed the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) to separate the Christian Religious Knowledge and Islamic Religious Knowledge subjects in the basic education curriculum.

The grouping of IRK and CRK under the Civil Education in the new curriculum by the NERDC had generated controversy in the last few months with religious leaders calling for their separate teaching.

Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, gave the directive at a meeting of Ministers of Education with education stakeholders from six geo-political zones and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Abuja on Thursday.

The meeting, which was attended by Commissioners for Education from various States of the Federation, was part of the ongoing efforts to strengthen the partnership within the three tiers of government in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals 4 (SDG4).

Adamu, who was represented by Minister of State for Education, Anthony Anwukah, said the directive to separate the subjects became necessary because of the various complaints by Nigerians, especially the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) that has been vociferous about the issue.

He explained that the collapse of the two subjects was done by former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration to reduce the number of subjects offered by pupils and students in schools.

The minister said: “There is this controversy over the merger of CRK and IRK in the school curriculum. There were complaints by parents that children were overloaded with so many subjects and the recommendation then was to merge one or two subjects. Unfortunately, water and oil were merged together and it is not working.

“So, to save ourselves the agony, the two subjects should be separated. We push that to the NERDC,”

Adamu, in his address, reiterated the commitment of the Federal Government to revamping the education sector and appealed to state governments as well as relevant stakeholders to support the federal government effort.

He also expressed the commitment of the government towards achieving the SDG4 by 2030 in line with the global timeline.The minister said Nigeria has selected the Goal 4 of the SDGs, which emphasizes inclusive and quality education for all and promotion of lifelong learning, for implementation in view of the importance of education as a fulcrum to national development.

He said the federal government was aware that in the journey towards achieving the Education 2030 Agenda, key issues including the phenomenon of out-of-school children, insecurity in and around the schools and infrastructure decay must be addressed.

The minister said there was also the need to have credible and reliable data, and how to address the challenge of poor teacher quality as well as teacher gaps, low carrying capacity in tertiary institutions, and poor learning outcomes.

“We recognize that the task of revamping the education sector is challenging, the ministry of education cannot do it alone. Our task is to coordinate national efforts to meet our national goals and objectives.

“It is our believe that with good planning, appropriate investment of resources, transparency, due process, effective collaboration and coordination of inputs and activities of government and that of all stakeholders, we will realize our vision of providing quality education to build and sustain adequate human capital for national development,” the minister added.

It’s a lot. You might not exactly be a professional in all the above mentioned areas, but you have to be able to handle them well enough not to suck at it and to help grow your blog’s readership.

The Business Side

Many people tend to underestimate or don’t understand the business side of blogging. They either start demanding for money too soon or are completely clueless about how sponsored content works around the policies of the corresponding firms, corporations and companies.

A good number of people don’t realize that some brands or companies have payment terms of ninety days; meaning even after doing publicity for them, you might not get your payment until after three months.

Some brands also have you working on sponsored content and you will have to send them draft upon draft till they like what they see. University degree is not a determinant for success, you can still succeed in life and do perfectly well, build and an exciting and well paying career without a university degree.

Although you do not need a degree to secure a job, you may eventually need it if you eventually desire to progress in career.

However, if for any reason you are not opportune or may not be opportune to obtain a university education, it is not the end of the world. Many people have been able to build a profitable and money spinning career after their secondary school without ever stepping foot into any University or institution of higher learning.

While there are some jobs you can competently do and excel without any form of college or university degree, there are definitely a few courses that require proper education for you to do well in them.

The few well paying jobs that may not require a university degree may require you to obtain some certifications that are related to your specific area of interest.

1. Real-estate Agents/Real estate brokers

The work of a real estate broker is to supervise and organize real-estate transactions which includes sell of real estate or rental properties and organizing loans. Although obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Photography will make your CV look great, you can actually do well in this field without going for the conventional University photography course.

With training on the job, development of photography skill and good marketing skill you can actually do well in the photography world. You will grow your clientele through your network of satisfied customers especially if you incorporate modern photography skills into your photography skills.

While a few photographers build successful careers in photography through just experience and skill, there are good numbers of them that take courses and certification particularly those involved in specialized form of photography like industrial photography, photojournalism or scientific photography.

Few hours after graduating as Lagoss State University's best graduating student, at the university’s 21st convocation held on Wednesday, March 22, 29-year-old Mrs Elizabeth Orefuwa welcomed a baby girl with her husband. 

The new mum who graduated with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA)  of 4.74, disclosed that she thought her baby might come before the convocation, and deny her the opportunity of
participating in it.

 "I was having contraction and was scared that the baby might come before the convocation. I told God to take control because I wanted to experience the convocation and God took control until I got home. 

It was when I got home that it started again and my husband took me to the hospital where I gave birth at about 1. 00 p.m. on Thursday."

Orefuwa, further said that her aim was to make a first classs, after writing the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) 7 times ,before gaining admission into the university in 2012.

"My aim is to get my first degree certificate after several years of waiting and to satisfy my dad, who has been insisting on academic certificate before professional certificate. 

He would always say to me then that I have put the cart before the horse. However, what kept me going was self-belief, focus and determination bearing in mind that I am not competing with others but with my own capabilities."

NYSC Corps

While speaking at the opening of a training workshop on biometric clearance of NYSC corps members in Ibadan, the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier General Sule Kazaure, on Thursday said that the newly introduced biometric clearance of corps members will eliminate payment of allowances to absentee and ghost corps members.

Kazaure who made the disclosure at the workshop entitled ‘Ensuring Accountability in Corps Members’ Activities Using ICT’, said the workshop was organised to give participants the requisite knowledge in Information Technology based clearance and monitoring of corps members in line with the anti-corruption crusade of President Mohammad Buhari.

Speaking through the Director, Corps Welfare, Mrs. Bose Okakwu, said he was optimistic, that the initiative, would eliminate, “the sharp practice of payment of allowances to corps members, who are not on ground to serve the Father Land,” adding that the biometric clearance would be used for the weekly Community Development Services (CDS) and monthly clearance.

He warned that corps members, who miss the biometric clearance without approval will not be considered for payment of their monthly allowances, adding that information generated through the biometric clearance exercise would form the basis for the determination of disciplinary cases.

Kazaure stated further that, “It is in keeping our operations abreast in the prevailing technology trend that the NYSC scheme in 2014 took a giant stride in ensuring that the mobilisation, deployment, registration, and relocation processes of corps members are ICT based.

“This new process has, however, received great ovation from the public for its positive impact in areas such as elimination of sharp practices perpetuated by fraudulent individuals and reduction of errors in our data and workload on our staff, Corps members and other stakeholders.

“The improvement on the new process also brought about the introduction of the use of biometrics for mobilisation and registration if corps members at orientation camps, which has not only helped in fast-tracking the process but also reduced impersonation and registration in proxy, including ineligible graduates.

“This resounding feat further reaffirmed our determination to adopt the use of biometric in the clearance of corps members for both weekly CDS and the monthly clearance . It is imperative to state that the feedback received from North West zone, South East zone, and the two pilot locations -Lagos and FCT, are very encouraging and positive and I believe the South West zone will follow suit.”

The Director of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Mrs. Christy Uba, said the ‘NYSC LGAS Attendance and Clearance System,’ was designed to enhance adequate monitoring and monthly clearance of corps members, including CDS at the various places of primary assignment, using their fingerprints and personal data.

1. Be willing to take criticism because it’s crucial to the learning process

2. Understand that you’re never beneath any kind of work, and you’d be surprised what you can learn from seemingly meaningless tasks.

3. Never feel you have to dress less feminine to be respected by others. Your appearance should be irrelevant in professional circumstances. It is your personal choice. Leaders can wear pink. Just be modest and professional and the rest is up to you.

4. Don’t be ashamed or afraid to ask for help.

5. Write thank-you letters and send thank-you emails. Be clearly and verbally appreciative at all times.

6. Be friendly with everyone at work. I mean everyone. I am friends with the janitors, and they’re awesome

7. Not only does being kind to your co-workers create a more positive environment for you to work in, but it is tremendously essential that you can work well with others if you want to be successful.

8. Understand your place and try to be ambitious while still refraining from creating any conflicts or undermining anyone’s authority.

9. Be flexible. Your role will change often. New experience is new knowledge and ultimately leads to being more well-rounded in your field.

10. Never underestimate the power of your education. If you have the opportunity and the means to further it, you should do so.

11. That being said, you don’t always have to pay an absurd amount of money for that education. You are often in control of what you get out of an education based upon how much you are willing to put in. There are plenty of options and there’s nothing wrong with being sensible about funding your schooling.

12. Be respectful. You don’t have to like everyone you work with, but you do have to show them respect.

13. Don’t ever feel professionally inferior because you’re a woman. Yes, women are still the minority among leaders and in management positions, but that’s an opportunity, not a setback.

14. Never be afraid to express your ideas to superiors. You win some and you lose some, but you win nothing if you keep your thoughts to yourself and confine your creative abilities.

15. Be patient. It’s easy to get frustrated when you aren’t reaching the place in your career that you had hoped. The fact is that all good things come with time, and maintaining a positive attitude is vital.

The governing council of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has introduced new dress codes, by which its students have to abide with.

In a circular to undergraduates students of the university,
the university management said, “indecent modes of exposure do not reflect the seriousness, dignity and character-moulding nature of the institution.”

The management warned undergraduates to desist from wearing tight outfits and those that expose sensitive parts of the body.

“It has been observed that some male and female students of the University of Lagos dress indecently on campus, even to lectures. Indecent dresses are either too tight, too short or expose sensitive parts of the body.

“Students should maintain a clean and well-cared for appearance in all settings on campus. Wearing of tight, strapless and revealing clothes whose length are above the knees are inappropriate,” the circular read.

Henceforth, male and female UNILAG students are not allowed to wear the following:

i. All tight-fitting clothes including skirts, trousers and blouses

ii. All clothes, which reveal sensitive parts of the body such as the bust, chest, belly, upper arms and the buttocks. Example of such dresses are transparent clothing, spaghetti tops, tubes, skirts and dresses with slits above the knees fall in this category.

iii. Outfits such as knickers and mini-skirts, dresses, which are not at least, knee length.

iv. Inappropriate outfits e.g party-wear, beach wear and bathroom slippers should not be worn to lectures.
iv. Outfits such as T-shirts, skirts and jeans, which carry obscene and subliminal messages.

vi. Trousers such as hip-riders and low waist jeans.

For matriculation and graduation ceremonies, the management mandated students to wear academic gowns on a black or grey suit. Lecturers and administrators have also been empowered to exclude students from academic activities if they are not properly dressed.

JAMB applicants in action

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB has warned members of the general public about the activities of fraudsters illegally selling fake JAMB forms to unsuspecting applicants.

The JAMB Registrar, Prof Isiaq Oloyede, represented by the Director of Special Duties, Mr Olujide Adisa, gave the warning in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital during the parade of two suspects by the Ogun state command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

The JAMB boss said that the forms for the 2017 session were not out yet as the board was putting all machinery together to ensure a hitch-free admission process.

The two middle-aged men were reportedly arrested in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital by the men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps at two locations.

They caught in the act of selling a form said to be fake to unsuspecting Joint Admission and Matriculation Board candidates.

Putting the records straight, the JAMB Director of Special Duties said that any form being sold currently by anybody is presumed to be fake.

He asked prospective applicants to visit any of the state offices of the board across the country for any inquiry and save themselves from the antics of the fraudsters on the prow.

LAUTECH students resumed this morning just like they were ordered by the school authority that school resumes today, Jan. 27, 2017, but little or nothing will be done today as lecturers have refused to resume classes. The strike was called off when the school authorities called the students back, but it seems the lecturers aren’t ready.

Students were seen on campus this morning but lecturers are nowhere to be found which has made many of them hang around the school premises.

Recall the school was closed last June as lecturers went on strike to demand payment of their salaries.

Malaika's  Interview
How was the bringing up before her graduation?
I give big kudos to my parents, it is now i know what its takes to be a parent, its not easy. For my daughter to be graduating today, i thank Almighty Allah, though she still has younger ones, but am very happy, because many people started but not everyone  was able to finish.

What the next step?
She will be furthering by doing her masters degree after her youth cops service, and getting a good job, and a life of her own.

I will like to cease this opportunity to beg our government, though they are trying, but we need to do more, there are many graduates but just roaming about the streets, no job, no skills, so its very sad, after so much efforts and sacrifice they put in their study.

Though i didn't have this opportunity while i was growing up, so i made up my mind to assist my children to achieve their aim, she's 22 now, as for me i dropped out of school due to lack of funds, but since when i became established as an entertainer, i futher more in my studies, which has really helped me, especially in my communication skills, which is very important.

Any regret that none of your children are not following your footstep ?
Not at all, i believe everybody has their own destiny, although, my grandfather was a musician, my father was a musician also, and so am i too, but nobody forced me to do what am doing right now, so for my children, its their choice, mine is just to support and guild them morally.

I will advise all youths  who wish to be something in life to try get education, because its enlighting one and makes you more useful to yourself and to the entire community at large, i won't support anybody claiming to do music and ignoring education. To be a successful artiste, you have to be prayerful, loyal, faithful to God and also people around you.

How do you fell graduating?
I give Thanks to God, and then to my parent, especially my dad, he has also been there for me everytime i need him, he cuddles me, advises me, and encourages me when am down, he also gears me up and also creates  time for me despite his busy schedule.

What is the next step now?
Being a graduate is just the starting  new phase of life of  entirely, life is all about a growth process, we move from one stage to another, this is just the beginning for me, and by the special grace of God, i will be pursuing my masters degree and my Phd.. I graduated from the department of insurance, faculty of Business Administration.

How does your dad personality pressure you among your peers in school?
Well, its has not hinder me to get what i want to get, my dad has always warn me not to brag about myself, and always preach to me to be humble and friendly, which i heeded to and its really worked for me, many of my friends don't  really know how influential my Dad was, and i really enjoyed that modesty.

Have you though to pursue his line as an entertainer?
I like entertainment, but it is just that my dream in life is not going to that direction at all, for now i want to still further more on my education, and work in a reputable company and later set up a venture for myself.

How social were you will in school?
I was not social, i only sometimes accompany my friend to departmental programme as a result of me being the only one left in the hostel, i don't like partying but only attend family gigs or a friends birthday occasionally.

Tonto Dikeh and her foundation visited a primary school in Abuja for her BacktoSchool charity project.

She wore this for the event and some Nigerians are complaining that her outfit isn't appropriate..

According to them, Tonto shouldn't have worn the ripped trousers because kids are very wonderfully sensitive and will do what she says instead of doing what she tells them. The Lagos State University, LASU, on Tuesday urged parents, guardians and well‎ meaning Nigerians to collaborate with the institution by donating buildings and equipment ‎for infrastructural development.

The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Olanrewaju Fagbohun, made the appeal at the matriculation of the newly admitted students for the 2016/2017 academic session in Lagos.

Mr. Fagbohun was represented by Olumuyiwa Noah, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the university.

He said that the donation would be accepted as part of efforts to make the institution one of the best ‎universities in the world. ‎He solicited the co-operation of parents and guardians by joining the Parents Forum of the university.

According to him, such forum will enable the parents and guardians to participate in moulding the character of the students to become responsible men and women of the country in future.

Mr. Fagbohun charged parents to partner with the university in nurturing the minds of the fresh students for a brilliant, better and rewarding future.

“I implore parents ‎to still continue to look after these young men and women the fact that they have gained admission to the university does not qualify them to grow out of parental care. ‎

“Parents should warn their children to steer clear of cult related activities, as the penalty for cultism is expulsion,” he said.

Mr. Fagbohun, however, congratulated ‎the parents and guardians for the success of their children and wards in scaling through the hurdles of the admission process.

A total of 6,026‎ candidates out of the 7,362 students offered admission were matriculated for the 2016/2017 academic session. ‎

The university said the admission exercise was transparent and on merit.
According to the university, the selection of candidates given provisional admission is entirely undertaken by each department as directed by the Senate of the institution. ‎

The National Association of Nigerian Students has issued a one week ultimatum within which the Governor of Oyo State, Abiola Ajimobi, should reopen Ladoke Akintola University of Technology in Ogbomosho or face a mass protest.

The association also gave the Vice Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Prof. Francis Otunta, seven days ultimatum to resign from office for alleged gross incompetence and maladministration.

The President of NANS, Chinonso Obasi, who issued the threats during a press briefing on the state of the nation held in Abuja on Friday, said NANS would “relocate its Headquarters to Government House in Ibadan and Umudike.”

He decried the nonchalant attitude of governor Ajimobi towards the closure of LAUTECH for the past eight months, without considering its effects on the students.

He said, “NANS chides the Governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi over the neglect of LAUTECH, Ogbomosho which has been under lock and key for almost eight months.

 We see his recent utterances that went viral on the social media during the students peaceful protest to Agodi Government House as shameful, uncivil and belittling the status of an Executive Governor.

The governor is hereby issued with a seven-day ultimatum to reopen LAUTECH or face mass protest.

“Similarly, ÑANS calls on the Vice Chancellor of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike to resign within seven days for gross incompetence and maladministration.

Failure to heed this patriotic call would be met with serious resistance as we shall not hesitate to occupy and chase him out of the university.”

You can really make money the easy way

Do you remember in the past we were warned to be careful about being in debt because interest never stopped charging us; interest never slept, never took a day off, and never took a holiday. Well, the reverse is true, as well.

Is your money making money while you sleep? Does it sound too good to be true? Since we still live in the age of the interest, it’s not that difficult to earn extra money on the side.

With that in mind, here are ways that you can actually earn money while you sleep.

Start a blog
Perhaps the most popular way to earn a passive income is by launching your own blog. It only takes a couple of minutes to set up and is cheap to start – just purchase your domain name and pay for hosting.

After that, start creating amazing content that people will be interested in reading or sharing. For example, if you’re an accountant that has helped small business owners with their taxes, then that could be your blog. I personally have my invoicing blog to help customers know everything there is to know about invoicing. This draws thousands of signups a month.

Make sure the topics you write about are popular. If you still love your pet rock, I doubt there would be enough people visiting your our site to monetise it. But you never know.

Once you’ve gained a following, you can start making money from of your blog by:

Earning commissions as an affiliate
This is where you push other people’s products or services on your site. Make sure these products or services are relevant to your blog. For example, that accounting blog could become an affiliate for accounting or invoicing software. Once you find an affiliate partner, you’ll be given a unique code so that whenever a visitor clicks that link on your site, you’ll earn your commission.

Sell-advertising
If your site has the traffic to become an affiliate, then it may also be good enough for advertisers to purchase ads on your site. You may start off small, like making under $20 per ad. But you may eventually be able to charge triple digits. Again, your site must be quality.

Find sponsors
This is slightly different from just selling ads on your site. Sponsorships may be a one-off piece of sponsored content or permanent logo embedded in your footer.

Sell your own information product
If you’re knowledgeable in a certain area, then you can start creating products, such as eBooks or videos, and selling them on your blog. It may take a lot of work to create and market your products, but once all the leg work is over, you can just set back and collect the proceeds.

Earn royalties
If you’re a talented musician, actor, or author, then you could earn royalties from your work. In other words, people will pay you for using your work or creative assets.

If you are not talented enough, but interested in earning royalties, then, check out Royalty Exchange. It’s a marketplace where you can buy and sell royalties.

Create a membership community
If you have proved yourself to be an authority figure, then you can create a membership community where you pay a monthly fee to receive additional high-quality content and information that’s not available to non-members.

One of my favourite examples is Timothy Sykes who makes more than $100,000 per month in passive income through his membership community, which discusses how people can make money in trading penny stocks.

Flip websites
If you’ve put in the time and effort in building a website and you have gained a lot of traffic, then you may be able to sell it to an interested party by listing on marketplaces like Flippa. I’ve bought and sold a lot of sites here and made a lot of money.

Sell physical products
Just like with a blogging site, there are several ways to earn a passive income by selling physical products. Probably one of the best-known ways is by selling your old junk on eBay. But even if you don’t have anything left to sell, you can start drop shopping. This is where you sell products for a company on eBay or Amazon and they’ll take care of the rest – including shipping.

You can also launch your own eCommerce store by using Shopify. They literally give you everything you need to sell products online from a complete online shop to including buy buttons on your social media channels.

Invest in stocks or shares
When you invest in stocks, you become a stakeholder. That entitles you to a share of their profits. Investing in stocks has been a popular way to earn a passive income for years, and thanks to the internet, it’s easier than ever to research and invest in stocks on your own.

Peer-to-peer lending
Companies like LendingClub, Propser, and Harmoney have created a new industry where anyone can become a lender. They will then match you with a consumer who either prefers or has trouble securing a loan from a bank. You can earn higher interest rates on the loans you issued since you’re dealing directly with the borrower.

Rent out property
Thanks to Airbnb, you can rent out your home while on vacation or your vacation home when not in use. You can also rent out your garage, parking space, or unused office space. It’s a nice supplementary income without really doing anything except placing an ad.
