Protest: Workers shut ExxonMobil Hq for sacking 860 Nigerian staffers

The Lagos headquarters of ExxonMobil has been shut down by the company’s workers’ unions over the sacking of 860 spy police without entitlement.

The workers besieged the office of the oil company, protesting the sacking of workers, mainly Nigerians, on Tuesday in Lagos.

The protesters accused the company of sacking the 860 Nigerian workers most of whom had worked with the company for over 22 years without regards for the rule of law.

Mr Rasak Obe, the Chairman of ExxonMobil Branch of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), told NAN that the protest was to express the disaffection of the workers with the management.

Obe said the leadership and members of the union were shocked by the mass sack of security personnel who had faithfully served the company for many years.

He said the management should immediately reinstate the employees of the security department sacked and pay all entitlements due to them.

The union leader also urged the management to immediately reinstate the 16 employees purportedly sacked in Dec. 2016 in a similar fashion.

He also demanded the immediate release and repatriation of over 20 expatriate personnel in the security department who had been engaged and kept in defiance of extant Nigerian laws and security directives.

According to him, this was an unfortunate situation which the Supreme Court of Nigeria had corrected with its April 20, 2018 judgment of 508 personnel.

“This underscored the scale of error in company’s assessment of the reality after the Supreme Court judgment.

“There are tens more who by the judgment are active employees of Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited.

“To say the least, this wholesale sack unambiguously conveys management’s disdain for the highest court of the country and mocks its ruling on subject.

Obe said the company was quick to indiscriminately sack Nigerians and replace them with expatriates, taking jobs Nigerians have successfully performed over the decades.

H said expatriate security personnel, many of whom were ex-service men, were currently engaged in the security department against the directives of National Petroleum Investment Management Services (NAPIMS) and the Nigerian Defence Ministry.

“The cost of keeping one of the over 20 expatriate security personnel in Nigeria would pay one hundred of the Nigerian security personnel currently being repressed.

“This impunity has been raised with HR and Law since February 2018, but the company continues to ignore our advice.

Mr Ogechukwu Udeagha, the Manager, Media and Communications of ExxonMobil confirmed the protest.

“Following the recent judgment of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, Mobil Producing Nigeria would provide compensation packages for affected personnel.

“And it is offering Human Resource, consulting services to assist with employment opportunities with third parties.

“MPN typically retains security services through third parties who are best positioned to provide these core competencies.

“We thank these individuals for their prior service in supporting the safety and security of our operations in Nigeria,” Mr Udeagha said.

Seidu was remanded in prison custody by Chief Magistrate Victoria Bob- Manuel Victoria after he was docked by the police on a two Count charge of conspiracy and murder contrary to Section 316 of the Criminal Laws of Ondo State of 2006

The Police Prosecutor Mary Adebayo told the court that since it was a murder case, the court had no jurisdiction to entertain the case.

Adeyemi had been accused of killing his girlfriend and tried to cover up the killing by burying the body of victim inside his room. The decomposing body of Khadijat was found in Adeyemi’s room seven days after she was declared missing.

Although the father of the deceased has said he had no interest in the prosecution, the Police, however, brought the accused to court to face murder trial.

In the charge sheet, Adeyemi was alleged to have killed 25 -year – old Khadijat, who was his girlfriend and buried her in his room.

The charge read ”That you, Seidu Sakiru Adeyemi and others at large on 27th day of July 2018, at about 7:30pm at Aratusi street, Oke Aro, Akure, did conspire with others to felony to wit murder contrary to section 324 ,Ondo State law of 2006.

“That you did kill one Khadijat Oluboyo, 25, by strangulating her to death and bury her inside your room contrary to Section 316, Ondo State law of 2006”

Since the court has no jurisdiction to hear the vase, the prosecutor prayed for an application to remand the accused the suspect pending the advice from the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP).

The Counsel to the suspect, Taiwo Gbadebo did not oppose this application.

UNILAG gate

According to a report by The Nation, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos ( UNILAG ), Prof Oluwatoyin Ogundipe has urged Joy Nwanna, a former student, and blogger, Linda Ikeji, to appear before its s*xual harassment panel.

The VC who made the appeal Monday at the Senate chambers said the appearance of the duo would help the Prof Chioma Agonmo-led panel to unravel Joy’s allegations of s*xual harassment against Prof Segun Awonusi of the university’s English department.

He assured them of protection should they come forward.

In May, Linda Ikeji featured a post of semi-nude photographs of Awonusi sent by Nwanna who accused him and others in the university’s English department of s*xual harassment.

Nwanna was a student of the University between 2012/2013 and 2015/2016 academic sessions.

In investigating the matter, Prof Ogundipe said the five-member panel dug into contacts from Miss Nwanna’s student records and tried reaching out to her and her next of kin but met a brick wall.

“She gave us the name of the next of kin, Samuel Nwanna. His number is 08060971976. We called but it did not go through.

Her sponsor is as Idighisai Grace. The phone number is 07033543627. We got in touch but it was another person that responded.

The number with us concerning Joy Nwanna is 07035574747. It was one Yakubu Idris that picked the call.

This particular individual had different personalities. If she is ready to attend to the request of the panel, we will give her necessary cover.

And even Linda Ikeji, who is an alumnus, we are appealing that as a proud alumnus of this university, she should assist this university to get to the bottom of this issue so that the name of the University will not be ridiculed.

“The email address she used to getting across to our University man (Awonusi), we sent a mail but got no reply.”

The VC said Awonusi on his part had appeared before the panel twice.

“Awonusi submitted a written report; the committee looked at the report. He submitted the email she sent to him and appeared before the panel twice,” he said.

Unfortunately, Ogundipe said the panel got no response from any other students regarding the sexual harassment case.

“The panel called on other students who had information about the case or others to come forward but nobody came forward,” he said.

Ogundipe said the University would not rule out using law enforcement agencies to trace Nwanna.

The VC urged members of the public with relevant information on the victim to help the University with the investigation.

He said: “The alleged victim was identified as Miss Joy Nwanna by Prof Awonusi in the course of his interactions with the Panel. Student records of Miss Joy revealed that she was admitted into the Department of English as a direct entry student in the 2012/2013 session.

She graduated from the University in 2015/2016 academic session.

“All attempts made by the fact finding panel to contact Miss Nwanna by the telephone numbers in her student records and by e-mail proved abortive.

The panel also attempted to contact Linda Ikeji to convince the alleged victim to come forward but Linda Ikeji was not forthcoming in that regard.

“The preliminary investigations have raised certain questions and issues that need to be investigated further. Investigations are ongoing.

"The University is making efforts to confirm the authenticity or otherwise of the pictures that were released.

"The University also requires Miss Joy Nwanna to come forward to substantiate the allegations.

“The Press and general public are urged to assist the University by impressing it on Miss Joy Nwanna to come forward to substantiate her claim.

An appeal is also made to Linda Ikeji to convince the victim to appear before the panel and state her side of the story.

“The University assures both Miss Joy Nwanna and Linda Ikeji of necessary protection should they decide to come forward.”

A 17-year-old girl simply identified as Peace was rushed to the hospital after feeling weak following a hot s*x romp with her lover in Sapele area of Delta state.

It was revealed that the teenage girl started feeling weak and faint after returning from work on Monday evening before she was taken to the hospital for checkup.

According to Sapele Oghenek, a Delta based journalist who shared the news in pidgin English, the doctor after running some tests - revealed that excessive s*x was the cause of the girl's weakness before she was treated and discharged.

On getting home, the girl's mother who reportedly attends Jehovah's Witnesses beat her and told her to show her the boy responsible. The teenage girl took her mother to her boyfriend's house but he had already fled after being alerted.

According to the report, some area boys revealed that the girl's boyfriend had met them to help him with what to do because his girlfriend was laughing at him that he doesn't know how to service her well and last long in bed and that her ex-boyfriend was better.

The boy who drowned

A young Nigerian boy who was just six years old, has died in Canada.

According to CTV News, the young boy who moved to Montreal from Nigeria with his family just two months ago, drowned on Monday while swimming in a crowded pool.

Witnesses told CTV Montreal that the swimming pool, located outside an apartment building in the city’s Saint-Leonard neighbourhood, was at capacity on Monday around 7p.m.

The child slipped under the water and was spotted unconscious at the bottom of the pool, witnesses said.

There was one lifeguard on duty, witnesses say, and she jumped into the pool and pulled the child to the deck. She immediately performed chest compressions on the child but was unable to revive the boy.

Diane Lambert said the child’s mother was in a state of nervous shock and rushed to hospital.

“I just see the little boy there on the floor and he was trying to breathe and she was pumping the heart, and he never came back,” Lambert told CTV Montreal.

The child was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The pool where the boy drowned

The boy was at the pool with his mother and two siblings, witnesses said. Friends of the family confirmed that the child moved to Canada just three months ago with his family.

A coroner has been called to investigate the circumstances that led to the death.

Under provincial rules in Quebec, small pools only require one lifeguard on duty. However, if more than 50 people are in the swimming area, a second lifeguard is required.

It’s unclear how many people were at the pool at the time, but witnesses say it was full. Local temperatures were well above 30C on Monday.

Raynald Hawkins with the Lifesaving Society of Quebec said the rules ensure that a lifeguard can do their job properly.

“It’s very hard for a lifeguard to see all those patrons at the same time,” Hawkins said.

Hawkins recommends that parents always be an arms’ length away from their children while at the pool and turn off their phone to avoid being distracted by texting.

He says it only takes 10 to 15 seconds for an unmonitored child to drown, and the emergency situation can be “very silent.”

Alibaba

Veteran comedian and the father of Stand-up comedy in Nigeria, Atunyota Alleluya Akporobomerere, popularly known by his stage name, Ali Baba, has taken to his Instagram page to make a proposal to the President Muhamamdu Buhari-led federal government.

The "Wedding Party" actor said that he can transform the national theatre in Lagos within three years if given the $322 million Abacha loot the federal government is set to share to poor Nigerians.

Writing further, the ace comedian on Wednesday, said he will use the money to turn the national theatre in Lagos into a “world class Formula 1 circuit”, adding that after investing in the project, he will return the capital to the government.

Alibaba who disclosed that the planned sharing of the Abacha loot “will not make Nigeria great” wrote:

“I have a proposal for the federal government. Instead of (sharing) the Abacha loot, give me the money, let’s (transform) the National Theatre, Lagos, to a world class F1 circuit and create many opportunities from that place, and in (three) years we can still give you back this same amount you are about to share.

“Because if you share this money, it will go down the drain. If you give it to me, I will give it back to you in 3yrs and you can go on and share the same amount.

“And think about it, if it was shared would it be available to be shared now? About the same size of land is what is now a tourist attraction in Abu Dhabi… with multi-economic dynamics. Sharing the money will not make Nigeria great. It will kill our already dying economy.”
