The Kogi State Polytechnic in Lokoja has been closed indefinitely, after the students were engaged in a serious riot over the killing of a female co-student. The school authorities ordered students to leave the campus and hostels to prevent loss of lives and property on Tuesday.
A student, identified as Jibrin Aliyat, was reportedly stabbed in the chest by a bike rider over N50 transport fare on Monday night. She was rushed to hospital but died soon afterwards, prompting violent protests. According to witnesses, the raging students used a truck to block the Lokoja-Abuja highway. They burned several cars and motorcycles, destroyed property, causing motorists abandon their vehicles and hide in nearby houses and shops.
Only after the school security personnel arrived and police officers used tear gas and shot into the air it became possible to disperse the crowd. The spokesman for police in the state, ASP William Aya, assured reporters that the situation had been brought under control. Vanguard reports that the alleged killer of the student was arrested after he went to the hospital for treatment. Ironically, it was the same hospital, where his victim died and her relatives alerted the police after spotting him here.
