While the internet is considered a positive mark towards technological advancement, the rate of ills it has been recorded to aid is alarming.
A man identified as Ibobo Frank (a.k.a James Simmons) had been sentenced to two years imprisonment by Justice Justice Kudirat Jose of a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja for defrauding two American women by pretending to be their white lover.
The defendant was convicted by the judge to a two-count charge of possession of fake documents by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after he pleaded guilty.
Mr. A. A. Adebayo, the anti-graft counsel, informed the court that the commission had received a petition from ‘a concerned Nigerian’ who refused to reveal his identity that a group of small boys living in Lagos were living far beyond their means.
He added that they were living in different apartments located in Lekki, Ajah , Westwood estate and Badore. He told the court that after carrying out preliminary investigation, EFCC operatives stormed Westwood estate and arrested Frank on January 7.
Frank was sentenced to two years imprisonment; his sentence was made effective from the date the defendant was arrested and detained by EFCC. However, the presiding judge while sentencing him warned him to desist from crime whenever he returned home.
About two weeks ago, a 19-year old school-leaver, Tobechukwu Igbokwe, was sentenced to 37 years imprisonment for defrauding an American of $40m by Justice Lateef Akapo at a Lagos High Court.
Tobechukwu Igbokwe, who is also known as David Prince and his accomplice gave the American the impression they had a huge inheritance they wanted to transfer to a foreign account. The unsuspecting victim, was then asked to send money to process the transaction and in the process, he wired $40m via Western Union to Igbokwe.
