Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state has said that no official of the Independent national Electoral Commission (INEC) has the authority to cancel results already confirmed by the returning officers in the respective districts or constituencies.

He spoke against the framework of the insistence by Aniedi Ikoiwak, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), that the commission had not released any results apart from the one federal constituency and nine state constituencies announced earlier this week.

While addressing journalists in Portharcourt on March 21, Governor wike  insisted that no INEC official has the power to cancel a result already confirmed by a returning officer and said those in favor of the cancellation should only do so in accordance to the provision of the law.

Wike also said the state government has gathered videos of the atrocities the military has allegedly committed across the state during the election rerun. He added that these videos would be released to the public at the appropriate time.

“The military-orchestrated violence in the state could be part of a plot by the APC to declare a state of emergency on the state on the premise of heightened propaganda,” he said. But according to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, INEC must cancel results of the re-run elections due to the irregularities in the conduct of the polls.

Meanwhile,  PDP berated INEC over conduct of Rivers rerun. PDP said INEC under the leadership of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu is disappointing as it has not been able to conduct any conclusive election in few constituencies and states so far and wondered what would be the case when the entire country is involved.
