A Divisional Police Officer, DPO, in charge of Ikenne Police Division of Ogun State, Mr. Patrick Onwu may have landed himself in troubled waters after he beat a female traffic warden, Inspector Anifat Bello, to stupor.
Her offence – she had the audacity to stop his private vehicle for allegedly disobeying traffic laws.
According to Vanguard, Mr. Onwu, who was on mufti when he allegedly committed the traffic offence, drove into a nearby filling station to change into his police uniform before returning to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, junction on IBB Boulevard way, where the traffic warden was discharging her official duty, and pounced on her.
Inspector Bello, the newspaper reports, is renowned for her dedication to duty to the extent that former President Olusegun Obasanjo, an elder statesman reputed for his frank comment on issues, once recommended her for a national honour during a familiarization visit to the State Commissioner of Police, Abdulmajid Ali.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in Ogun, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the development, saying CP Ali was unhappy about the incident and had directed that the matter be thoroughly investigated.
“The woman traffic officer reported the matter to the CP and he had directed that the matter be thoroughly investigated”, Adejobi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police said.
He added that “The CP was not happy when the woman came with a swollen face. If the allegation is true, I am very sure the CP will know what to do”.
