Gambia’s President-elect tells Jammeh- You can’t reject polls

Gambian President-elect Adama Barrow on Saturday called on his predecessor Yahya Jammeh to accept defeat in the December 1 election.

According to Barrow, Jammeh had no constitutional right to reject the results and declared:

“I urge him to change his current position and accept the verdict of the people in good 

faith for the sake of the Gambia our homeland. I open up a channel of communication to convince him to facilitate a smooth transfer of executive powers in the supreme interest of this country,”

Barrow also appealed to his own supporters to act with “discipline and maturity.”

Meanwhile, the African Union on Saturday called the statement by Gambia’s President Yahya Jammeh rejecting his loss in December 1 polls “null and void” since he had already conceded defeat.

“The Chairperson of the Commission strongly urges President Yahya Jammeh to facilitate a peaceful and orderly transition and transfer of power,” said Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma who also called on Gambia’s security forces to remain neutral.
