It was a day the people of Ibadan, Oyo State, will not forget in a hurry. From the moment that the death of the former Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Samuel Odugade, was announced, the city has been agog with activities.

After the departed Oba was interred, Ibadan witnessed an unusual excitement as it awaited the successor of the late monarch.

The Otun Olubadan, Saliu Adetunji, was the monarch-in-waiting. Since 1976 when he became a prominent member of the traditional council, he has been a major pillar in the advancement of Ibadan cultural heritage.

In the early hours of Friday, March 4, 2016, the city witnessed a huge turnout of residents and visitors from all walks of life. They converged on the Oja Oba-Mapo area of the city to celebrate the new royal father of Ibadan.

The coronation, which was held at the Oja’Ba Square, had prominent natives of Ibadan, traditional rulers and captains of industries in attendance.

Oba Adetunji is an erudite businessman and records label owner whose clout had attracted notable musicians including the late Awurebe singer, Alhaji Dauda Akanmu, Epo Akara and King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal. The stars stuck with the Olubadan at his Popoyemoja, Ibadan, home since the coronation was announced.

In its character as a supporter of cultural and traditional events, Globacom was at the forefront as main sponsor of a royal banquet organised in honour of the monarch. The banquet was held on March 5 at the Ibadan Recreation Club.

On the sponsorship, Globacom said it remained proud of the cultural heritage of Nigerians from the geo-political zone.

It added that it was committed to promoting Nigerian culture through support for celebrations of festivals and events with strong traditional value.

The company also said in a statement that it was proud to associate itself with the unity which the Olubadan of Ibadan stool symbolised.

Wasiu Ayinde and sensational pop-gospel singer, Lanre Teriba, popularly known as Atorise, played at the royal banquet.

“Oba Adetunji expressed appreciation to the Governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, whose leadership brought to reality the coronation, where the governor presented a staff of office to the Oba. He also appreciated Globacom and other corporate organisations which added glitz and glamour to the historic event,” the statement added.
