ISIS has claimed responsibility for the terror attack in which a man shouting 'Allahu Akbar' injured two female police officers with a machete in Belgium.

The machete-wielding terrorist walked up to the main police station in Charleroi and knifed the women just before 4pm yesterday afternoon.

ISIS today confirmed that the assailant was a "soldier of the Islamic State".

A message released by the terror organisation's official media outlet, Amaq news Agency, said: "The executor of the attack in Charleroi, Belgium, was a soldier of the Islamic state and carried out the operation in response to calls to target citizens of countries belonging to the crusader coalition."

It came as prosecutors revealed the attacker was a 33-year-old Algerian, identified as K.B, who was known to authorities but not for terrorism.

They said that the man, who has lived in Belgium since 2012, may have been inspired by terrorism.
