It was a tearful sight to behold as an unidentified woman and her child were crushed to death when a truck driver lost control and rammed into a busy Oja Oba market in Ibadan on Tuesday.

The shocking accident happened around 8am as traders at the popular market were opening shops while many others were waiting along the Oja Oba/Molete road to board vehicles on their way to work.

Eyewitnesses said about four other persons were killed in the accident, with several others were critically injured. Most of the affected persons were operators of commercial tricycles that converted part of the market road to their garage, as well as some of their passengers, Punch gathered.

About four of the tricycles were mangled by the impact of the collision with one of them badly burnt by ensuing fire.

One of those killed was an engineer with the Ibadan Properties, Mr. Monsur Ajedayo, who was caught up in the disaster as he waited for a taxi beside the road.

His body and that of others who died in the accident were said to have been deposited at the Adeoyo State Hospital morgue while the injured persons are receiving treatment at the hospital and the University College Hospital, Ibadan.

Speaking about the accident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Oyo State Police Command, Adekunle Ajisebutu said three persons were killed in the accident while four were injured.

“I can confirm that there was an accident in Oja Oba area of Ibadan that claimed the lives of three persons. Four persons were injured also. One of them is receiving treatment at the UCH while the rest were taken to Adeoyo State Hospital,” he said.
