About Eleven people lost their lives after Shiite members were attacked by youths during a procession Katsina, Kaduna and Sokoto on Wednesday.
There is now evidence to show that police and the army also were involved in the deadly attack.
According to a photo and video by Hassan Bala Al-Rafidhy, policemen and army officers could be seen on camera mercilessly beating and clubbing Shia members in the guise of arresting them.
Another photo shows a suspected Shia member with cuts in the head after he was stoned and clubbed to death.
It was gathered that irate youths in Tudun Wada community of Kaduna South Local Government Area had attacked and killed four suspected members of the Shia sect, and torched the residence of their group’s leader.
The mob also demolished the Shiite’s Islamic school in the area. Many say that police and the army alongside the mob coordinated the attacks on the Shia members. Activities of the group was recently banned by Governor Nasir El-rufai of Kaduna State which many have tagged as dictatorial and an infringement of the constitutional right to peaceful assembly.
According to Wikipedia, Shia is a branch of Islam which holds that the Islamic prophet Muhammad designated Ali ibn Abi Talib as his successor. Shia Islam primarily contrasts with Sunni Islam, whose adherents believe that Muhammad did not appoint a successor. Instead they consider Abu Bakr (who was appointed Caliph through a Shura, i.e. consensus) to be the correct Caliph.
